The first Lower Mainland baby born this year was Langley's Shane Greenwood, who arrived at Langley Memorial Hospital at 12:26 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1.

He weighed in at a healthy 9 lbs. 5 oz. and he was actually a little bit late, mother Alyssa Burkhardt said.

"He was due Dec. 27," Burkhardt told The Times.

Mom and son are back home with father Justin Greenwood and big brother Shawn.

Shane shares his birthday with his paternal grandmother, who was Surrey's first baby of the year 44 years ago.

It was a busy night at Langley Memorial with a total of five New Year’s babies being born — three boys and two girls.

The first New Year's baby in B.C. arrived in Kamloops at 12:02 a.m.

David James Jr. was a bit early.

His mother's due date was Jan. 9.
