Young Syrian newcomers to Langley were dressed to the nines for a Langley RCMP welcome dinner, held on Oct. 19 at the detachment in Murrayville.
Langley RCMP invited the more than 170 Syrians who now call Langley home, to a dinner and meet and greet as a way to “demystify police,” said Supt. Murray Power.
“We wanted to give them a little time to settle in Langley and now we felt it was time to welcome them. We want this building to be a safe place they can come.
“We want our newcomers to see police as protectors and keepers of peace,” said Power.
Around 150 new Langley residents attended, many of them members of young families. They were welcomed by more than two dozen police officers from the Langley detachment, several of whom were wearing their iconic dress uniforms.
Most of the Syrian boys arrived wearing suits, with vests and ties or bow ties, while the little girls wore beautiful dresses, many with bows. Teenage friends Amed, Ailobid and Nabeel wanted a selfie with Power.
Const. Deanna Law, dressed in her red serge, met with the many of the moms and children who had gathered under the tent. Several government representatives also attended.
