The Langley Seniors Resource Society is bringing Langley’s senior community together this winter.
The LSRS is doing this by hosting a week-long open house from Jan. 15 to 19 at the Langley Seniors Recreation & Resource Centre (20605 51B Ave).
The LSRS open house will showcase its programs and services for adults aged 50-plus.
From Tai Chi to yoga, to classes and workshops ranging from storytelling, to the use of health tracking apps and the presence of Artificial Intelligence in our day-to-day lives, the goal of LSRS’s open house is to connect seniors with peers and to help them stay socially and physically active this year.
Some of the highlights will include complimentary cake and coffee, ‘swag bags’ with a tour of the Langley Seniors Recreation & Resource Centre, door prizes, $5 off a new membership, free exercise program try-its, as well as a free showing of the Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk, taking place Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m.
“This is our second annual open house and we’re excited to welcome the community to see all of the great programming and services that we have to offer for the 50-plus,” said LSRS recreation director Sandy Lucas.
“We are often told by our members and community partners that we are the best kept secret in Langley, and we want to break down that barrier by inviting all to learn about what we do here and the fun that we have.”
Other events of note are an introduction on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 1 to 1:30 p.m., to the “One World” course facilitated by community interfaith educator Harold Rosen (the course officially starts on Feb. 13); Tai Chi - Free Try It! on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 11:35 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.; an evening Gentle Flow Yoga class – Free Try it! on Thursday, Jan. 18, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (open to people 30-plus); and the free storytelling workshop on Friday, Jan. 19, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Meetings focus on LGBTQ group, affordable housing
Seniors will also have an opportunity to attend two meetings this month and next, organized by the Langley Seniors Community Action Table (LSCAT).
Happening Monday, Jan. 22, a meeting about a new seniors LGBTQ group in the community is about finding inclusion, belonging, and meaningful connections, that can become more challenging as we age.
Drop-in time is noon to 2 p.m. at the Timms Community Centre, 20399 Douglas Cres.
For those looking to be part of a diverse and inclusive seniors social crowd, they can drop in to this event and be part of forming a new seniors LGBTQ group.

With affordable housing being top of mind for many, Cloverdale-Langley City MP John Aldag will host a Town Hall: Let’s Talk Senior Housing forum exploring possibilities and collaborations to ensure affordable, accessible, and appropriate housing options for seniors in the community in which they choose to age.
The town hall discussion happens Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Hope Community Church, 18625 Fraser Hwy. (Clayton Heights neighbourhood of Surrey).
All are invited, including seniors, concerned family members, neighbours, elected or appointed federal, provincial or local government officials or their representatives, non-profit community groups, and for-profit business people (including realtors and developers).
