The Langley Times has taken first place in its circulation class in Newspapers Canada's 2016 CCNA awards.

The Langley Times has been named the "best overall newspaper" in Canada in its circulation class.

The Times took top spot in the 2016 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards, for papers with a distribution of more than 25,000.

Second place went to the Surrey Now, while the Prince George Citizen took third place.

The Times was also awarded first place in its class for best front page as well as second place for its editorial page and second place for coverage of the arts.

In addition, the Langley Times is nominated for two awards at the upcoming B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association's (BCYCNA) Better Newspapers Competition.

Times reporter Gary Ahuja has been nominated for a sports writing award for his feature Remembering Ryan, while Dan Ferguson's image of José Figueroa enjoying his first taste of freedom after two years in sanctuary, has earned him a nomination for best spot news photo.

Winners of those awards will be announced on May 7.
