Man wanted for Langley bank robberies caught

The Langley RCMP arrested Shawn Merrick on a Brookswood roof Wednesday.

Merrick is wanted on Canada-wide warrants for being unlawfully at large from a federal prison. He had been convicted of second degree murder.

At about 11 p.m. Merrick was captured without incident in the 21900 block of 44A Avenue

Merrick, who's been at large since March 31, is also alleged to have committed a string of robberies in Surrey and Langley (See the previous Langley Advance story).

Coordinated efforts between Langley RCMP, Surrey RCMP, Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team, Integrated Police Dog Services and Air 1 were instrumental in the safe apprehension of this wanted man.  Tips from the public also helped lead police to locating Merrick, according to Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr.

"With the assistance from the public and joint investigation led by Surrey and Langley RCMP, we were able to locate and safely arrest Mr. Merrick," says Surrey RCMP Inspector Manny Mann.

Once police confirmed his location, the wheels were set in motion to take him into custody while minimizing the risk to the public and police.  Air 1 observed Merrick hiding on the roof of a residence as the various police units closed in.

"This is a great example of the cooperation and coordination between several police units in a multi-jurisdictional investigation," Mann added.

He has been transported back to prison to finish serving his sentence and has been charged for 6 new counts of robbery.

On Wednesday afternoon, May 6, the Crown approved additional charges against Merrick, in relation to various robberies:

  • April 17 Canada Trust, Walnut Grove

  • April 17 Royal Bank, Willowbrook

  • April 24 Royal Bank, Aldergrove

  • May 4 CIBC, Aldergrove

Surrey and Langley RCMP are now sifting through a significant number of tips received from the public.  The viable tips will be provided to The Canadian Bankers Association, who had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the his arrest.
