Meeting a quick one

City council meeting wraps up in five minutes

For the three young people in the audience who came to do research for an assignment on municipal government, it probably wasn’t the ideal meeting to choose.

The March 21 regular meeting of Langley City council wrapped up in about five minutes, after council dealt with two housekeeping bylaws and then adjourned.

The community charter requires that meeting dates must be set well in advance and can only be canceled by a special resolution of council.

That happened last summer, when the City found itself with an especially light agenda set for the following week.

In this case, however, when council last met, two weeks ago, there was no indication of how much work would need to be done at the March 21 meeting.

Because the staff who attend the meetings are not compensated for the time they spend, it does not cost the City any extra for council to meet.
