Langley Township firefighters called for an extra hall to help stamp out a fire in bark mulch north of Walnut Grove on Tuesday evening.
The fire, at 204th Street and 102B Avenue, was quickly put out, but firefighters are watchful for potential brushfires right now due to the hot and very dry weather of the past week.
The cause of this fire is unknown, said assistant fire chief Bruce Ferguson, but it may have been started by a discarded cigarette.
“We do encourage people to be really careful with their smoking materials,†Ferguson said.
At this time of year every year firefighters have to deal with small grass fires and smoldering bark mulch in roadside medians and gardens.
Some grass fires have expanded widely, including one that scorched a strip of trees and grass along the Trans Canada Highway in 2010. The fire scorched 20 acres and threatened several homes. It was thought to have been started by a hot car part or spark flying off to the side of the road.
