Night market in Cloverdale looking for vendors

The Surrey Night Market will be back for its second time around and organizers are hoping this year’s will be bigger and better.

“We’re going to be very aggressive in the next two to three weeks,” Satbir Cheema, director of SNM said about its campaign to attract vendors.

Last year, the market had roughly 80 vendors - about 40 selling food and another 40 selling merchandise.

Cheema said while he hopes for the same amount of food vendors, he is pushing to grow the merchandise variety this year.

“If we hit 60 to 75 merchandise vendors, we’ll be pleased,” he said.

This year’s night market, held on the Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds at 17726 62nd Ave., will again feature music and dance performances, with a strong emphasis

on multiculturalism. The goal is to showcase a different culture each weekend.

There’s even talk of setting up a beer garden this year.

Cheema announced Monday the market will be offering free vendor space to immediate families of all Canadian Forces personnel and veterans living in B.C. Asked why, he said he worked closely with Canadian Forces at PICS (Progressive Intercultural Community Services) and saw this as an opportunity to give back.

“This is something we owe to them.

They have done so much. We all enjoy our freedoms and liberties because of the work that they do to protect us and our families,” he continued.

“This is the least we can do.” The family-friendly event will kick off May 29, running every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 11 p.m. through to Sept. 20. The cut-off date for food vendors to register is May 11. For more information contact surreynightmarket@gmail.com or call 604-805-3440.
