A plastics factory at 194th Street and 56th Avenue was the scene of a Thursday afternoon fire that sent black plumes of smoke billowing in the air and which could be seen as far away as Ladner.

Surrey fire crews aided by neighbourhing crews descended on Mansonville Plastics as RCMP rerouted the heavy traffic that uses that area. By mid afternoon the crews had knocked down the fire that created the heavy smoke and were dousing the area.

“It looks like a volcano,” said Newton resident Karlene Fortin, who spotted the fire as she walked to pick up her son from school.

A plastics factory at 194th Street and 56th Avenue has caught fire.

Smoke is billowing up into the sky and can be seen from miles away.

“It looks like a volcano,” said Newton resident Karlene Fortin, who spotted the fire as she walked to pick up her son from school.

“It’s crazy.”

Surrey RCMP say they have four officers doing traffic control in the area, and there is talk of stopping trains in the area.
