Various police units from around the Lower Mainland worked together in Langley to catch a well-travelled suspectwho crashed a stolen truck and fled on foot in Willoughby on Saturday night.
While patrolling Langley, a supervising officer heard over the radio that a Fraser Valley IRSU (Integrated Road Safety Unit) officer was following a stolen pick-up truck in Willoughby.
At that time the vehicle was eastbound on 84 Avenue in the area of 200 Street.
The supervisor was nearby and started moving that way. By then the driver of the stolen vehicle had turned off the truck lights and was driving north on 206 Street.
The patrol supervisor attempted to deploy a spike belt but as he did, the stolen vehicle drove past him heading directly into a dead end street.
The two officers followed the vehicle onto a residential property in the 20400 block of 84 Avenue where the truck had crashed near the edge of the property and the driver fled on foot. A perimeter was set up and the Lower Mainland Police Dog Services (PDS) was called in.
The dog was able to establish a track into the bush.
After nearly an hour and a half, the tenacity of the dog handler and the police dog, with help from her colleague, caught the suspect hiding in some tall grass.
The 28-year-old Salmon Arm man was arrested for possession of stolen property. The truck he crashed had been stolen in Calgary. The motorbike in the back of the pickup truck had been stolen during a break-in in Vernon on Aug. 4.
Tyrone Emblau has been remanded in custody and appears in court Thursday.
“The successful conclusion to this investigation is a great example of our units working together ‘to catch a bad guy,'” said Langley RCMP Supt. Derek Cooke.
