Langley RCMP have identified the driver killed in a single vehicle crash that sent a stolen pickup into a tree in Murrayville on Friday morning.
Police confirmed that a 31-year-old Squamish man died in the crash at 2:30 a.m. July 14.
The force of the crash caused the stolen pickup to flip, ejecting the passenger. The 25-year-old passenger, of no fixed address, suffered a serious leg injury and remains in hospital.
It’s believed that around 2 a.m., the two men were involved in a break-in at an auto shop in Aldergrove, said police. The pair used the stolen Ford 350 pickup to leave the scene, then headed west along Fraser Highway, before turning at 222 Street.
Just past the stop sign at 52 Avenue, the pickup truck slammed into a tree with such force, the vehicle came to rest upside down, said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy. The driver died at the scene and the passenger was rushed to hospital.
Police kept the road closed well into Friday morning’s commute so they could investigate.
It’s not known if the passenger will face charges.
