An older power pole was knocked down by a vehicle about 8:20 a.m. Thursday, cutting power to a portion of Langley City.
The driver of the vehicle left the scene, despite live wires hanging down as a result of the crash.
Power was out at most businesses and residences between 201A and 203 Streets and 56 Avenue and Fraser Highway. BC Hydro and Telus crews were on the scene quickly to begin work on restoration of service, but wires were hanging down near the Penny Pincher store on 56 Avenue and across the back alley. Langley City fire department was on scene quickly to keep vehicles and pedestrians away from the live wires.
The pole will need to be replaced before power can be fully restored.
The Times is among the businesses affected. The newspaper's office at 20258 Fraser Highway has no electricity service, although the phones are working.
Times publisher Dwayne Weidendorf has made arrangements so that work on the next print edition of The Times can continue while the power is out.
BC Hydro has not set a time as to when power will be restored.
