'Project X' axed as police presence upped

Weekend mega party promoted on Facebook fails to materialize

Langley RCMP had extra patrols, brought in more auxiliaries and set up roadblocks to ensure that a mega party promoted on Facebook would not mar the peace and quiet of a Walnut Grove cul de sac.

The party, dubbed Project X, had been expected to draw at least 2,000 partygoers on Saturday night.

The RCMP first got wind of the party when the children of several officers saw the Facebook invitation, said Cpl. Holly Marks, who speaks for Langley RCMP.

Marks said that some of the extra personnel included officers on bicycles.

But the evening turned out to be a “non-event,” Marks said.

“There were no large groups of gatherings.”

But police took no chances, and brought in the extra manpower, she said. It’s possible the whole episode could have been a deliberate cock and bull story.

“The party was either a hoax or it was cancelled,” she said.

Abbotsford police and transit police had been made aware of the possibility that there would be a large gathering, and information was shared with other RCMP detachments, Marks had said on Friday, Aug. 24.
