Langley Township will consider a rainbow crosswalk, but it likely won’t make a decision until sometime this fall.
Langley artist Elaine Brewer-White spoke at the July 11 council meeting to suggest the crosswalk be added, either in her home area of Fort Langley or elsewhere.
Rainbow crosswalks have been painted in several communities around the Lower Mainland recently, including in Maple Ridge, to mark Pride Week.
“I have family members that are LGBT, [lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender],” said Brewer-White.
She first brought up the idea on Facebook and was pleased with the response from people she knew there.
The project wouldn’t cost the Township much, she said, as she has already found a sponsor for the paint.
Brewer-White said the crosswalk could be a symbol not just of gay pride, but of the acceptance of all groups in society.
Council unanimously voted to send the matter to staff for a report. It is expected to be back for council’s consideration after the summer break, likely sometime in September.
