Metro Vancouver and Langley City workers checked out a pothole that opened Tuesday afternoon on 56th Avenue near 200th Street.

A sinkhole opened in the middle of 56th Avenue just east of 200th Street in Langley City Tuesday afternoon.

Metro Vancouver and Langley City staff were on scene and had closed one lane each way on 56th Avenue.

The sinkhole extended from the median between the lanes into one of the eastbound lanes. It appeared to be about three to four feet wide. A large truck pumped liquid out of nearby manhole covers.

The cause appears to be linked to the Carvolth Trunk sewer project, which has been under construction in the area recently.

The Metro Vancouver sewer project saw the district install 1.4 kilometers of sewer pipe from Fraser Highway to the B.C. Hydro right of way near Michaud Crescent.

A spur of the sewer line led up 56th Avenue near the point where the sinkhole opened. The problem may be linked to the old sewer line that was being replaced.

Officials from Metro Vancouver did not return phone calls by press time.

Langley City officials said the sewer in the area is about four meters deep, and the hole could take a while to fix.
