Social media threats against Langley schools were "not deemed to be viable threats" but are likely to continue, a letter to parents from Superintendent of Schools Mal Gill has advised.
"The district is aware that there have been multiple concerning posts regarding online threats to the safety of schools circulating on social media (TikTok, Snapchat, etc.)," the Sept. 22 letter from Gill said.
"One of the posts has named Langley Secondary School. After investigating, the district, in consultation with the RCMP and Safer Schools Together (SST), has confirmed that these posts are not deemed to be viable threats."
SST provides training in violence prevention and intervention for law enforcement agencies, school districts, and community partners, throughout North America.
"Given the viral nature of social media, the district acknowledges that more of these posts may continue to surface in the future," Gill predicted.
"The district takes every report seriously," he added.
"As always, and in alignment with emergency procedures, the district will continue to follow-up with any reports of threats reported by students, staff, and families."
Gill said if a parent or student sees a "troubling post on social media that threatens a school," they should report it using the anonymous reporting tool for students at https://erasereportit.gov.bc.ca/."
"The district will get the report right away and work with the RCMP and Safer Schools Together to see if the threat is real and if any actions are needed."
"The district expects all students to follow the student code of conduct to help keep our community safe," Gill warned.
"If a student breaks these rules, they may face consequences such as school suspensions or even police involvement."
