The fact that the skies were hazy from the wildfires burning across the province was almost suitable for the sold-out wildfire relief fundraising tournament held at Redwoods Golf Course on Tuesday.
Redwoods owner, Doug Hawley, said more than $50,000 had been raised by the time eager golfers hit the course.
“We haven’t even got to the silent auction or the other stuff during the dinner,” said Hawley, who anticipated thousands more would be raised to help evacuated and impacted fire victims.
It was in early July, while Hawley was watching the news nightly and seeing the devastation the wildfires were causing that he decided he would put together a golf tournament with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the Red Cross to help out those impacted by the wildfires.
“The tournament sold out in five days,” he said.
“We got huge support from the golf community. We are small group who really stick together,” he said. On top of that, staff at Redwoods donated their day’s wages to the cause.
Among those participating was professional golfer James Lepp.
Even the steaks were donated for the barbecue dinner held Tuesday evening.
There were treats for golfers throughout the course. Well Seasoned owner Angie Quaale handed out home-made Bellini-style freezies to the golfers while Chopped Leaf offered wraps at another hole.
