October through January are the most dangerous months to be a pedestrian in the Lower Mainland.

That’s something to reflect on, say police, who were out with bylaw officers, and representatives of ICBC at busy bus stops in Langley on Thursday afternoon, working to raise awareness about pedestrian and driver safety as the days get darker.

Officer Jenny Chung of the Transit Police joined Langley RCMP Const. Julie Bion, auxiliary Const. Gary Singh, bylaw officer Simon Jottey, and ICBC’s Leanne Cassap on Fraser Highway near the Willowbrook Shopping Centre.

They handed out reflective tags to be clipped to jacket zippers, purses, or backpacks to enhance pedestrian visibility.

Cassap said the campaign is part of a province-wide effort to urge pedestrians and drivers to stay safe throughout the dark fall and winter months.

Almost double the number of pedestrians are injured in crashes from October of January, said Cassap.

ICBC and police are encouraging pedestrians and drivers to be more aware. Drivers need to watch for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections, and pedestrians are encouraged to make eye contact with drivers, and to not keep their eyes glued to their phones.
