The Conservatives have nominated their candidate to run in the Langley-Aldergrove riding in this fall’s election.

Lawyer and businessman Tako van Popta was the winner in a sizable field of candidates, all vying to succeed Mark Warawa, the long-serving MP who announced he would retire at the end of his term.

“I want to thank Mark Warawa for being an excellent MP, and blessing us all by serving us so well in Ottawa,” said van Popta. “He has left big shoes to fill, and I will work hard every day to follow his example.”

He also noted the recent health issues of Warawa, who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Van Popta has been involved with the Surrey Board of Trade and the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association as well as the Langley Memorial Hospital Board.

“It is incredibly humbling to have been nominated the Conservative candidate for Langley-Aldergrove,” said van Popta. “Now the real work begins. I look forward to hitting the doorstep soon to speak with voters from across our riding.”

There were six candidates who were approved by the Conservative Party to contest the nomination. President James Pratt said the next step is reaching out to the voters of the riding before the October election.
