Three years for carrying loaded gun

A violent, career criminal will spend the next three years behind bars after he resisted arrest and was found to be packing a loaded gun in his waistband during a takedown by the Langley RCMP street enforcement unit.

Dale Lorne Kerry Shawcross has more than 35 criminal convictions against him and drew the attention of the street enforcement unit last December.

On Dec. 7, 2012, as the result of an investigation, Shawcross was arrested for driving a vehicle that had been stolen from Richmond three days prior. The arrest took place on Glover Road where several officers were required to arrest him after he resisted, refusing to allow himself to be handcuffed, said Cpl. Holly Marks

Once the officers successfully got him in handcuffs, they found a loaded .40 calibre pistol stuffed into the front of his waistband. He was also wearing soft body armour.

On May 1, Shawcross pleaded guilty to possession of a restricted firearm and a second firearm related offence. He was sentenced to three years in prison and given a lifetime firearm prohibition. In the past, Shawcross has been convicted failing to comply to property and driving offenses all the way up to assault with a weapon.

“We are very happy with the sentence given to Shawcross.

“Obviously the court is recognizing the threat that guns pose to our community,” said Langley RCMP Supt. Derek Cooke. “Hopefully this will send a clear message.”
