Mechanics at work in a nearby industrial unit were startled by a “loud boom” that alerted them to the smoky aftermath of an explosion at a commercial business in Aldergrove.

Langley Township fire crews, RCMP, and emergency services were dispatched to a smoky scene at the 3300-block of 262 Street on Wednesday just before 5 p.m.

They arrived at an electric motor repair shop with a blown-out front window and fuming building.

“There was some sort of explosion,” confirmed Langley Township deputy fire chief Russ Jenkins.

Firefighters stepped through the unit’s front window with hoses and worked in a group of nearly 10 firefighters to contain the blaze.

“He had everything from paint, oil, and other stuff in there,” one eyewitness mechanic told the Aldergrove Star about the business owner who rents the commercial unit.

As of Thursday, officials were still investigating the cause of the explosion, which is not yet known, Jenkins said.
