Traffic calming measures on way for Garnett neighbourhood

Township council has approved traffic calming measures for several blocks of 201 Street, in the area of R.C. Garnett Demonstration Elementary School.

The measures are being taken in response to complaints residents have lodged with the Township over the volume and speed of traffic.

In January, 145 residents attended an open house but, a report to council noted, there was no agreement on which measure was the best for slowing traffic.

In late February, council endorsed a staff recommendation for speed humps from 69 Avenue to 74 Avenue, and a curb extension at the corner of 201 Street and 70A Avenue to narrow the road and discourage speed.

A crosswalk outside the school will be replaced with a raised one in another measure to slow down drivers.

Paul Cordeiro, the Township’s manager of transportation engineering, said that traffic counts carried out in October on 201 Street  show that the number of vehicles falls within the typical range for a collector road, which is anywhere from 1,000 to 8,000 or 9,000 vehicles a day.

He said that most of the speeding occurred in the 30 k/h speed limit zone outside the school, particularly at the start and end of school when children are being dropped off and picked up.

Residents claim that high school students on the way to and from R.E. Mountain account for a large volume of speeders.

Others ignoring the speed limit are drivers bound for the Langley Events Centre, and major retail centres in Willowbrook and Willoughby.
