Trans Mountain pipeline subject of Langley forum

The environmentalist PIPE UP Network is holding a community forum in March, as local debates over Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion heat up.

The forum will be held at Walnut Grove Secondary from 12:30-5:30 p.m. on March 8.

Speakers will include economist and author Andrew Nikiforuk and tar sands campaigner Melina Laboucan-Massimo.

There will be a panel of speakers, question and answer session, and workshops, although organizers are still planning out what form some events will take.

The organizers are offering free childcare and a raffle for door prizes.

The Trans Mountain pipeline has run through Langley for about 60 years, but its owners are now planning to almost triple its capacity. They have also proposed moving sections of the pipeline, possibly through the Salmon River floodplain near Fort Langley, or through the Redwoods Golf Course, which is slated to eventually become a public park.

Both options have drawn fire from landowners nearby, or directly above, the proposed routes.
