The trial of a man accused of a Langley carjacking got underway this week.
Dustin Murphy, 31, is charged with robbery, possession of stolen property over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle and use of an imitation firearm while committing an offence in connection to a carjacking that happened on Feb. 9.
On that evening, a Maple Ridge woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle in the 6300 block of 204 Street, waiting for her husband to return.
When the woman heard the driver’s door open, she thought it was her husband joining her.
Instead, she heard an unfamiliar voice telling her to get out of the vehicle, police alleged at the time.
The woman fled and the suspect sped away in the car.
About eight minutes later, it is alleged the car crashed into a hydro pole in the 6200 block of 238A Street and the driver fled on foot.
A police dog found him hiding in a nearby garden shed.
A search of the car found what police described as “a very real looking” replica gun.
Murphy was arrested and charged with the crimes.
