Two Langley events will mark the National Day of Honour on Friday, set aside by the federal government to mark the contributions and sacrifices of Canadian troops in Afghanistan.
Two Langley soldiers, Master Cpl. Colin Bason and Pvt. Garrett Chidley, were among the 158 Canadians killed in action in the country, during the deployment of the Canadian military there from 2002 until 2013.
The City of Langley and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 21 will be holding a very brief ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday at the Douglas Park Cenotaph, on Douglas Crescent.
At 7 p.m., there will also be an event at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, with MP Mark Warawa in attendance. It will be held at the Langley Youth For the Fallen: A Walk to Remember location. This is a tree plantation to honour the military and civilians who fell in Afghanistan. This project was initiated by Langley teens Michael and Elizabeth Pratt. At its official opening on Nov. 11, 2011, Warawa presented a flag that had flown over the Peace Tower in Ottawa. It will be flown on Friday night.
Members of the public are invited to take part in one or both events.
