An activity room at Brookswood Baptist Church was destroyed in an arson fire on Saturday.

The tenant of a travel trailer was airlifted to hospital after fire ripped through his home in rural south Langley on Friday afternoon.

Township fire department spokesman Bruce Ferguson said that the man’s burns did not turn out as serious as was first thought, and he has already been released from Vancouver General Hospital.

Ferguson said investigators are unsure of the cause of the blaze, but have all but ruled out arson.

Ferguson said that “there is nothing left” of the trailer which was located at 19801 28 Ave.

He said nearby tenants alerted the fire department.

The fire was reported shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday.

At 5 a.m. on Saturday, firefighters from Brookswood and Murrayville, who had been at the trailer fire the night before, were called to a fire at Brookswood Baptist Church, 20581 36 Ave. where they found an activity room ablaze.

Ferguson said that a window of an activity room at the back of the church was smashed and books set on fire.

The fire itself caused between $5,000 and $10,000 damage, while water damage could reach as high as $30,000, he said.

Because of the building’s sprinkler system, the fire was contained to the activity room.
