Election 2018: Two women join race for Township council

Two women are joining the race for Township council.

Stacey Wakelin, founder of BC Parents for Inclusivity, and Margaret Kunst, operations director with PuCKS Powerplay Foundation, have both announced they will be running in the municipal election on Oct. 20.

Wakelin formerly owned Clipper Street Scrapbook Co. and is the founder and event organizer for Compassion Pop-up Langley.

Through her work with BC Parents for Inclusivity, she has also been a spokesperson in support of the new SOGI 123 curriculum in schools.

In a press release, Wakelin said she feels it is important that local government representatives speak for all residents in the Township, while respecting diversity and encouraging inclusivity. She also believes mayor and council serve best when “they work together as a team and when the process is transparent and ethical.”

“Development is a necessary part of the Township’s evolution, and should be guided by what we want the future to look like — safe, sustainable communities for our families built keeping the environment in mind,” she said in a press release.

Kunst, through the PuCKS Foundation, has worked with Langley’s newcomers, vulnerable populations and marginalized youth. She has “witnessed the extraordinary, selfless support and generosity of individuals, local businesses, non-government organizations, teachers, counsellors and municipal works in the Township,” a press release states.

Kunst and her family have has also owned a small sawdust and shavings business for 20 years, and through that have worked with local farmers, horse enthusiasts and retailers.

Born and raised in Langley, Kunst and her husband, Fred, now live in Brookswood with their four children.

“Marg Kunst has a deep love for the Township of Langley. It is where she actively chose to live, where she does business, where she volunteers, where she was raised and continues to raise her family,” a press release states.

“Marg wants the next generation in the Langley Township to have the same choices and experience the great lifestyle that she enjoyed and is so proud of.”
