Police cordoned off a section of 204 Street, north of 53 Avenue in Langley City on Thursday afternoon. Unconfirmed reports say that a suspected shoplifter entered a nearby building and that he may have a weapon.

Langley RCMP are in the process of securing a warrant to find the gun used by an alleged shoplifter who shut down a portion of Langley City for hours late Thursday afternoon.

The area around 204 Street and 54 Avenue, and the Brighton apartments, were blocked off with police tape for hours while the Emergency Response Team and the Police Dog Services dealt with a man held up in one of the units. It was believed he had a gun and wasn't coming out.

The man was suspected of shoplifting from the nearby Army and Navy, said police. Loss prevention officers there believed they saw a gun which prompted the heavy police presence.

The man got away and police seemed to know he was inside an apartment and refusing to come out.

Sometime around the dinner hour, he surrendered, said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks.

No one was injured in the incident.
