UPDATE: Langley man nabbed by Vancouver Police K-9 unit

Daniel Vandekerkhove, 34, has been charged with one count each of break-and-enter and possession of stolen property.

A 34-year-old Langley man has been arrested after breaking into a home through an open window in the 1600 block of Laurier Avenue in Vancouver on Tuesday morning.

At 4 a.m., a woman woke to find a man inside her home. She screamed at him and he ran out the front door. The homeowners immediately called 911.

Police arrived within minutes and used a police dog to look for the suspect. Officers set up a containment area and the K-9 unit tracked the suspect to the 1100 block of West 29th Avenue.

The K-9 unit found the man hiding on the porch of a house. He fought with the police dog and ignored commands by officers to give himself up. He was eventually taken into custody.

Upon his arrest, police found items in his possession that are believed to have been stolen from the home, said Vancouver Police.

The suspect was checked out by paramedics at the scene and then sent directly to jail. He is facing possible charges of break-and-enter and possession of stolen property.

Daniel Andrew Vandekerkhove has been charged with one count each of break-and-enter and possession of stolen property.

Vandekerkhove was remanded into custody until his court appearance in Vancouver Provincial Court on Wednesday.

According to Court Service Online, Vanderkerkhove has been committing crimes since 2001, and was most active in 2006 where he was charged with break and enter in Langley among other charges.

With this hot weather, Vancouver Police have investigated several break-ins where the suspect entered the apartment or house through an open window or door.

Police are asking homeowners to remain conscientious about locking their windows and doors, particularly since about one-third of residential break-ins show no signs of forced entry.
