A Langley homeowner found a thief armed with a knife hiding in the closet of his home early this morning.

It happened around 5 a.m. in the 25100 block of 24 Avenue after a woman leaving for work spotted a bicycle in the ditch near the entrance to her property.

She also noticed someone had gone through her vehicle and the door of the residence had been left ajar.

The woman told her husband and continued on to work.

The husband noticed some items had been moved around and decided to do a more thorough search of the residence.

As he was going through the basement, the homeowner discovered a young man crouched in a closet with a knife in his hand.

Police said the property owner demanded the return of a wallet being held by the suspect and when it was returned, the suspect ran out of the house, leaving his shoes behind.

The homeowner was not harmed.

He was described as a young Caucasian with a darker complexion, 5’9” to 5’10”, wearing a hoody and grey socks.

Police believe the bicycle located in the ditch belonged to the suspect.

The Lower Mainland Police Dog Services attended and established a track but in the end, the suspect was not apprehended.

Anyone with information that might assist with this investigation is asked to call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.
