Langley-Aldergrove MP Mark Warawa took a pot shot at the first Throne Speech from the incoming Liberal government of PM Justin Trudeau.
On Friday, Warawa, recently named the Conservative’s critic on seniors issues, noted that those over 65 were not mentioned in the speech.
“The Prime Minister made many promises to Canadian seniors, but he has not appointed a Minister for seniors and does not have a plan to keep those promises,” said Warawa. “I am very concerned that Canadian seniors will be overlooked by this government.”
“Right now one in six Canadians is a senior,” Warawa said. “In fourteen years, one in four Canadians will be a senior. Canada needs a sustainable plan for seniors that will meet their needs. I call on the government to present a clear plan for supporting Canadian seniors.”
The Throne Speech did include a promise to enhance the Canada Pension Plan. The Liberals have also promised to roll back Conservative changes that would see seniors start to receive old age security at 67 instead of 65 years old.
