Wedding bells for McBurney Lane?

Matt Creechan wants to get married in McBurney Plaza and Langley City councillors like the idea but it will depend on working out a few details.

He made his request to have McBurney designated like other City properties such as Sendall Gardens so small weddings and gatherings could be held there.

if it builds on the possibilities and it contributes to downtown, I think it’s a great idea,” said Coun. Dave Hall.

Creechan said making the refurbished McBurney available for rental would help showcase the downtown and increase visibility for businesses.

He suggested the City put on limits like it has for Sendall, such as people numbers, seating, even decoration (no confetti), no amplified music, and no food or drink.

Renters of Sendall also don’t have exclusive use of the park and there are time limits.

Despite the limitations, it’s a popular place for weddings and wedding photos.

Creechan said McBurney could be like that and suggested that a requirement could be to use the security that the City contracts since that person would be family with municipal bylaws and procedure.

Councillors like the idea but had reservations such as impacts on business.

“Parking is always in issue in the downtown core,” added Coun. Gayle Martin.

She put forward a motion to have staff look into the impacts and issues and report back to council, which the rest of the councillors adopted.
