Don’t know about you, but I occasionally enjoy some good fiddle-playin’ music.
Mix in some tasty local wines, introduce any creative use of wood as a decorative feature (especially old stuff), add in a charity hook, and you can be assured you’ll have my attention.
So, when Felicity Holmes from Backyard Vineyards reached out to me a few weeks back, I was all ears.
She wanted to share with me some exciting news about this winery, located at 3033 232nd St.
Backyard Vineyard is hosting a charity-based “grand reveal†this Friday, from 5 to 9:30 p.m.
“This evening is to promote the new renovated tasting room at the winery, and also give back to the community as partial proceeds will be going to the Langley Child Development Centre,†Holmes said.
If the wine isn’t a sufficient enough enticement for you, then let me tell you a little more about this small boutique winery that has grown in capacity from 500 to more than 12,000 cases of wine.
With the facility’s growth came the need to refurbish and expand the tasting room. Directive achieved, in spades. I have to tell you I fell in love with the rustic setting, including a huge 1900s reclaimed wooden beam (which I’m told was salvaged from a Royal Bank in Vancouver) as the focal point of the new bar.
And did I mention there’s music? The Doolins will provide their unique sound featuring both fiddle and guitar stylings.
Let’s play together
Coming up on that still-new-to-us holiday called Family Day, a little birdy over at Willowbrook Shopping Centre told me about a fun event that’s in the works.
What do you have planned for Monday, Feb. 9 – besides maybe indulging yourself by sleeping in a little later than normal?
Although the weather has been pretty great – for the most part – in recent days, I’m not holding out hope that it will be conducive to a lot of outdoor play time on Feb. 9.
Therefore, I think I’ll join all the others for some indoor fun at the World Play Day being held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the mall.
The kid-friendly event sounds like a blast – with a multicultural flare peppered in for good measure. It will feature an entertainment zone with Irish dancing, music, sports demos, and African storytelling.
The festivities will also feature and arts and crafts zones – for kids of all ages – to make African necklace crafts, popsicle stick totem poles, and flag magnets.
And, I might have to fight my nephew for space in the LEGO zone, where Robin Sather will create a giant LEGO globe.
The first 500 kids to complete a Willowbrook event passport at World Day will receive a goodie bag and a chance to win a special kids prize pack. With all that in mind, I’m just throwing it out there as a possible plan for the holiday Monday.
Wrapping aids schools
Meanwhile, speaking of Willowbrook, they also offer a Valentine’s gift-wrapping service that will once again benefit the Langley School District Foundation.
It runs from Feb. 12 to 14, and will be located in the north side of the mall, next to Michael Hill Jewellers, with wrapping starting at $3.
