What's in Store: Tree planters in demand in Langley

Volunteers are still needed to help plant 150 trees along the Salmon River nature area in north Langley on Sunday.

TD bank, through its Friends of the Environment Foundation, is hosting a tree planting event at 18 sites (planting more than 4,000 trees) across the province, including one in Langley.

A recent foundation study found that 96 per cent of Canadians feel it is important to plant trees today in order to sustain a healthy environment and improve quality of life for future generations.

This is the fifth year TD has hosted its tree day, and people are welcome to participate by registering ahead at www.tdtreedays.com.

From schoolyard naturalization and energy conservation, to tree plantings and environmental education, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) is proud to provide funding to help sustain an incredible array of grassroots environmental programs across the country.  In 2013, TD FEF supported over 900 projects with $4.4 million in funding. Thousands of donors give to TD FEF on a monthly basis, and TD Bank Group contributes in excess of $1 million annually. TD also covers the management costs of running TD FEF, which guarantees 100 per cent of every dollar donated funds environmental projects in the community in which the donation was made. For more information on how to donate and get involved in your community, visit www.tdfef.com.

Awards coming

I’m counting down the days now, anxious to find out who the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce has picked as winners for this year’s business excellence awards.

The annual celebration, complete with a gala dinner, is coming up on Wednesday, Oct. 22, where the businessperson of the year – among others – will be crowned.

The awards evening provides an opportunity to celebrate Langley businesses and individuals who make a significant contribution to business, community spirit, and service by demonstrating outstanding business leadership, innovation and success, said chamber president Kristine Simpson.

Although the awards night almost always sells out, I’m told there are currently tickets still available for the event at Cascades Casino. Tickets are $80 from info@langleychamber.com or 604-530-6656.

At press time, the chamber was still verifying the list of finalists, and indicated it would be released perhaps Monday. So, you’ll be able to catch that full list online with this column, search “excellence” at www.langleyadvance.com.

Offering expo reminder

Speaking of the chamber, I want to remind you of the free small business information expo happening in Langley next week.

It happens on Thursday, Oct. 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Langley Events Centre, 7888 200th St. and seems like a great opportunity for entrepreneurs wanting to getting into business with the government.

Again, this is hosted by the chamber, and allows small- and medium-sized businesses to have face-to-face interaction with various organizations and government departments that might need the products or services offered by local business.

"This free event is to provide an opportunity for business operators and entrepreneurs to meet face-to-face with departments and organizations that provide government grants and/or training programs to assist business startup and growth," explained Chamber executive director Lynn Whitehouse. "This is the first time Service Canada and partners have held the Expo outside of downtown Vancouver, and we hope that it will become an annual event in the Fraser Valley."
