Willoughby developers question online information

Developers who hope to build commercial units, condos, and townhouses at the base of the Willoughby Slope say misinformation about the project is spreading online.

A number of people turned out last Monday at a Langley Township council public hearing, and almost 20 people spoke with all but one opposed to the project.

Some of the usual issues that have caused concern over Willoughby projects were raised, including a lack of space in local schools for more students, along with general density issues and parking worries.

However, Dave Wallace, chief operating officer of Portrait Homes said inaccurate information was circulating online for several days prior to the meeting.

Some of the claims made both online and at the public hearing were either inaccurate or didn’t have any evidence, said Wallace.

One of the concerns brought up by several residents was the idea of a rat problem in the neighbourhood. Wallace said Portrait is talking to nearby building managers and strata associations, but hasn’t seen solid evidence there is an issue.

On parking, Wallace said there should be a lot more parking for this complex than for many others.

The project consists of two five-storey mixed-use buildings with offices and commercial space on the ground floors and condos above, and 91 townhouse units up the slope towards neighbouring residential developments.

Information claims there will only be 18 visitor spots for the entire complex.

Wallace said there will be 18 visitor spots for the townhouses, 18 for the condos, and 23 or more on-street parallel parking spots created.

At least some of the commercial parking stalls will be available to visitors from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., as well.

Langley Township council is scheduled to vote on the third reading of the bylaws for the project on Monday evening.
