An Abbotsford woman who says Jesus was a feminist is the guest speaker at Trinity Western University for its gender lecture.

The free lecture is put on annually by the TWU Gender Studies Institute and is open to the public.

On Jan. 14, Sarah Bessey of Abbotsford is speaking.

“I’m a feminist because I love Jesus so much,” she said.

Bessey believes the arc of Scripture reveals a liberating vision for women.

Her new book is Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bible’s View of Women. It analyzes the Scriptures and church practices that address gender equality, as well as advocates for more diverse experiences and female leadership positions to become part of the contemporary church.

Bessey first came on the scene as a blogger at sarahbessey.com, focusing on life with her husband and three children. She has since become an accidental grassroots voice for postmodern and emerging women in the church on issues from mothering to politics, and theology to ecclesiology.

Her writing has been well received in many publications including ChurchLeaders.com, Relevant Magazine, Converge Magazine, A Deeper Story, SheLoves Magazine, and Emergent Village.

She also works with Mercy Ministries of Canada, a non-profit home for women seeking freedom from life-controlling issues. A second book is in the works.

Her lecture is 7-8:30 p.m. in the TWU Northwest Auditorium and is open to the public.
