Aslaug Bussey

September 20, 2018

August 3, 1919 - September 20, 2018
Aslaug Bussey was born on August 3, 1919 in Volda, Norway and passed away on September 20, 2018 at the age of 99. She was the second of five children born to Thor and Marie Fremmerlid. The family moved to Canada in 1927. They first settled in Saskatchewan, moved to B.C. in 1930 and lived in the Central Park area of Burnaby for many years.

Aslaug married Roy Bussey in 1937. With the help of both their fathers, they built a home near Moody Park in New Westminster where they lived for most of the first 36 years of their marriage. They enjoyed going to the pub after a game of golf or bowling with friends. A special family treat was going out for Chinese Food or taking the kids to the White Spot drive-in. Aslaug loved the water and spent many summers with the family at White Rock or in Birch Bay, Washington. After living and working for five years (1957-1962) on Vancouver Island, they bought and operated the Super Valu store on 10th Avenue near the Burnaby/New Westminster border. Aslaug and Roy moved to acreage in Langley in 1973. Once they retired, they spent half the year as Snowbirds in Indio, California. Roy passed away in 1984 and Aslaug remained on the acreage until 2007. For many years Aslaug, in company with her friend, Clarence McGaw, continued to spend the winter in Indio; they also travelled extensively in their motor home. Aslaug loved the outdoors, warm summer weather and the nickel slots in Las Vegas and Loughlin, Nevada. She enjoyed good health for most of her life.

Roy and Aslaug had three children: Joan, Jean and Norm. Aslaug was a kind and caring Mom who had an open-door policy for her children's friend providing them with meals, food-to-go, emotional support, rides or a place to stay.

Aslaug has five grandchildren (Deb, Cindy, Rob, Monica and Denise), eight great grandchildren (Brad, Nicole, Sarah, Mike, Karrie, Chris, Logan and Oliver) and four great-great grandchildren (Garrett, Colin, Balian and Maximus). Aslaug was predeceased by two sons-in-law, Mike Howe and Ernie Hedberg, whose company she enjoyed immensely. She was also predeceased by her parents, Roy and his five siblings, her four siblings, Clarence and many friends.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at The Residence at Clayton Heights for looking after our Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma and Great Great Grandmother for the last four years of her life. Aslaug will be buried next to Roy at Langley Lawn Cemetery. At her request, there is no funeral service, except for a family gathering.
