Betty Carter, 88, of Langley BC passed away on 17 February 2018 at Laurel Place Hospice in Surrey BC, after a long struggle with cancer.
Betty was born on 15 February 1930, at the family farm in Saskatchewan, near the town of Shellmouth on the Manitoba border. The family attended Hoffenthal Lutheran Church near their home. Betty went to high school in Langenburg and graduated as a registered nurse from Yorkton General Hospital in 1953.
She married James Carter in Yorkton in 1955 and had three children. She moved to Vancouver and returned to nursing full time in 1970, working in the operating room, emergency ward and Long-Term Care Program in Burnaby. She retired in 1995 after a lengthy career bringing comfort to those in need.
Her many hobbies included cooking, painting and sewing. After retirement she travelled extensively, regularly visiting her family in Asia and the USA. She always had time to come up with creative activities for her beloved grandchildren, and to welcome guests into her home.
Betty is predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Margaret Kendel, brothers Alfred and Paul, and sisters Alvina and Emma.
She is survived by sisters Katie and Louise, daughter Sandra (Peter) Luongo, son Kent (Amy) Carter, daughter Bonnie (Ed) Bach, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church at 5950-179th Street in Surrey at 10:00 am on 26 February 2018.
The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am with Pastor Ian Wemyss officiating.
Interment will be at 3:00 pm at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre in Surrey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made online to the BC Cancer Foundation.
