IRVING - HENRY VERE

Passed away peacefully at Langley Memorial Hospital on December 28th, 2004. Vere was predeceased by his daughter, Susan, and his two brothers Bill and Don. He is survived by Hazel, his wife of 65 years, son Steve and wife Rhonda Irving, daughter Joan Evans, grandchildren Jackie, David, Lynne, Michael and great grandchildren Dominic and Desirea. Vere grew up in the environs of Edmonton where his father served as a United Church minister. Vere completed his bachelor's degree at Duke University in North Carolina and then joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He served aboard ship in the North Atlantic between 1941 and 1945. After the war he worked as a teacher in Dawson Creek for a short time before re-enlisting in the navy. Vere achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander and finally retired from the navy in 1967. Vere returned to teaching in the Okanagan until he retired in 1979. Vere and Hazel relocated to Vancouver Island to be close to the ocean they loved so well. After living in Qualicum Beach and Sidney for the last 25 years, they recently moved to Langley to be closer to their family. Vere will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for his integrity, sense of humour and strong character. A special thank you to Dr. MacIntosh and the staff of 4th floor South at Langley Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's United Church, 2410 Malaview Ave., Sidney, B.C. on January 15, 2005 at 1pm.
