Robert (Bob) was a big man with a big heart, a love of family, people, entertaining, animals, food, travel, cars, knowledge and especially gifting and sharing. Born in Portland he graduated grade 12 then moved with his parents Emil and Edith as well as brother Larry to North Vancouver and completed a teacher's certificate at UBC. Teaching at Hjorth Road Elementary he met Helen and married in 1964 and they settled in Langley with adopted son Tim Hurford. Robert took on the head teacher position at Anderson Road in 1964 and in the June of 1965 opened Sound of Music. After leaving teaching in June of '67 to pursue an entrepreneurial drive he continued his love of teaching by sharing his knowledge through mentoring youth and community service activities. In 1967 Robert & Helen were blessed with the birth of Michelle. Bob was the founding president of Langley Kiwanis 100 and the first Lieutenant Governor for the district from that club. In the 70's he opened and co-owned an Antique store in Fort Langley "Gold Key Antiques" and was active in the auction scene at that time. In total Bob opened or acquired 15 different Sound of Music locations from Victoria through Abbotsford as well as a distribution of pianos and organs throughout Canada leading to the birth of Berndorf Distributors in the 80's.
