CLAUSEN, Thomas

The Clausen family is saddened by the passing of Ejgil Thomas Clausen (known as Thomas). Tom passed away on November 9, 2016, one day after reaching his 92nd birthday. Born in Randers, Denmark on November 8, 1924. Tom emigrated to Canada with his parents. They settled in Canwood, Saskatchewan where Tom lived his childhood on the farm. Tom joined the Canadian army in 1941 and served until 1945. As a trooper in the South Alberta Regiment, Tom saw action in France, Holland and Germany. For his service in France in 1944, Tom was awarded that country’s highest award in 2015. He was awarded the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honour.
After the war, Tom moved to the Revelstoke area of BC. During this period Tom met the love of his life Helen Herrmann. They were married in 1950 and lived 66 wonderful years together until his death. The Clausen family moved to Burnaby in 1956 where Tom worked as a longshoreman. During the years in Burnaby, Tom was active as a Scout leader, and was a member of the South Burnaby Winter Club.
The family settled in Langley in 1974 and Tom continued his community service by joining the Langley Lions Club. Tom received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service from the Lions International Foundation in recognition of his commitment and service to the Lions and their programs. He held a Life Membership with the Lions.
In 2013, Tom and Helen moved to Chilliwack. He passed away in the family home after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife Helen, his sons Robert and David, his daughter-in-law Darlene and grandsons Christopher (wife Chantelle), Timothy and Kevin.
A gathering family and friends to celebration the life of Tom will be held at the Clausen family home (6090 Ross Road, Chilliwack) on December 10, 2016 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
