Una Margory McMURPHY

January 17, 2005

MCMURPHY: Una Margory (nee Ballingall-Newman) passed away peacefully on January 17, 2005 in Maple Hill Extended Care facility, Langley, B.C. She is survived by her only child, Bert, and his wife, Pearl, of Chilliwack, B.C. Una was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, March 10, 1913. After leaving high school, Una became an employee of Eaton's Department Store, Winnipeg, and continued to work there during the Depression Years until her marriage. In 1942, with her husband and son, Bert, they moved to Vancouver. They made their home in South Burnaby. Una was married and widowed twice - first to Cecil Gordon Newman (1939-1955), and then to Douglas McMurphy (1964-1969). Three sisters and one brother predeceased her. Una was interested in organizations so she joined the Eagles - New Westminster where she became the pianist for the Ladies Drill Team. Una was also a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 83, Burnaby. In 1971, Una moved to Langley City, and at the same time transferred her Ladies' Auxiliary membership to the Legion's Langley Branch 21. Una became an active participant with her fellow members in preparing the food for all the catering at the Legion, and enjoyed all the fun and laughs that took place in the kitchen; she called it enjoyable KP duty. Una received her Life Membership from the Royal Canadian Legion. She also participated in other activities: she belonged to the Rebekah Lodge for many years; did volunteer work at the Langley Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, and at the Penny Pinchers. Una loved the social contact in all her activities -- the camaraderie and laughter amongst her friends were a great part of her life and gave her lots of pleasure. Una leaves relatives in BC, Manitoba and Ontario. A special thanks to the staff of Langley Lodge and Maple Hill Centre, who cared for Una during the past five years. Cremation was handled by Henderson's Langley Funeral Home, Langley, BC. No service by request.
