Editor: When I was a teacher in South Africa, during the Apartheid era, under a fascist, non-democratic government, where I was a second-class citizen restricted in all aspects of my life because of the colour of my skin, I got 13 paycheques a year — a double paycheque in my birth month and a yearly increment in salary.
As a teacher, I was afforded a lot of respect and support by the parents of my students and the community at large. These days as a teacher in B.C., working under Apartheid seems like the lesser evil when I look at the trampling of my constitutional rights, the vilification of teachers in the media and the absolute contempt this government has for the work I do with and for the children of our province.
