Letter: Brookswood plan threatens Murrayville roundabout

Dear Editor,

I have concerns about the potential for increased traffic accidents at 216th Street and 48th Avenue

Langley Township’s engineering department has indicated that it may remove the 5 Corner roundabout as a consequence of the Brookswood Plan.

That would be a mistake. The roundabout acts as a natural obstruction that slows traffic at the intersection. A traffic light would result in serious accidents, the same as before the roundabout was built.

The intersection lying at the base of two steep hills is a natural place for motorists to speed up to “beat the light.” This does not happen with the roundabout being there and acting as a deterrent to speed.

We have seen a big drop in the severity of accidents at this intersection since the roundabout was built.

I personally witnessed vehicles travelling in excess of 150 km/hr when the intersection was a 5-way stop. That is impossible with a roundabout.

The roundabout must be preserved in any new Brookswood plan.
