Dear Editor,
This Halloween we decided to conduct a social experiment. We left our full candy bowl on our front porch, under the unblinking eye of our surveillance camera, with a sign that read:
Take one, two, three if you dare.
Remember Santa is watching!
Happy Halloween!
Most surprising were the number of adults who filled their pockets with treats meant for the children. Then there were the parents directing their children to take multiple handfuls, which was a little worse then the parents who meekly watched as their children demonstrated their lack of empathy for the scores of trick or treaters who came across our empty bowl later that night. Fortunately for humanity more children carefully chose their treats within the guidelines we set out than those who violated them.
If we cannot bestow upon our neighbours the the responsibility of self regulation of candy consumption, then what can we trust them with?
