Letter: English language moving too fast

Dear Editor,

I cannot keep up with the English language that adopts new words to our vocabulary constantly. The latest I learn from the online Oxford Dictionary, are the words twirk, selfie, cake pop, unlike, form, and metime. I can only guess the meaning and why they have been adopted into the world’s most progressive language.

However, adopting and creating new words I read, is nothing new. For instance, William Shakespeare invented many words we use, including the words luggage and puke.

Some words in common use are silly. You can ask a crook, “How are you?’’ He can answer, “I’m good.”

Like hell he is. He is a despicable character who should have answered, “I’m well,” or something to that effect. He certainly is not “good.”

Another word that is used constantly is “only.” It proceeds most ads, whether it be for a trifling item, a Rolls Royce, or a property worth millions of dollars. Usually, the price is preceded by the word “Only.”

All I can about those ads is, “Only... my ass!”
