Letter: Fragile people still need their mail

Dear Editor,

The government is planning to discontinue house-to-house deliveries of mail, and inaugurating neighbourhood boxes where one can pick up their mail.

This will not be an inconvenience to able-bodied people, but there should be some proviso for those too old or fragile to walk.

A request form for home delivery, stating the reason, attested to by a doctor’s signature, should be sufficient.

But mail delivery in Canada is often pathetic: for instance, a card sent to White Rock from Langley taking the better part of a week before delivery; a cheque mailed from Langley to Lethbridge, AB, over a week ago which has still has not been received.

If you wish to get really angry, just look up the wages and pensions paid to employees of the post office. Like most civil servants in Canada they’re out of proportion to those of the average worker.

It’s rather like our politicians and senators, you may say, but being good citizens, we keep our mouths shut and pay our taxes.

Mike Harvey, Langley
