I find it interesting that the same people who oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline have no problem living with a potential bomb right under their own homes – a natural gas pipeline.
Should it leak or rupture – and they do – there generally are injuries and death, yet we live quite comfortably with that threat.
I have lived in Glen Valley for 25 years, 1,000 feet from the existing pipeline which has been there for more than 50 years. Should it rupture, the oil would flow down the hill and probably flood our property.
Am I worried? No more than I worry about the gas pipeline to my house. We see the pipeline inspection helicopters fly over our house, twice daily, seven days a week.
One of the reasons we pay more for fuel in the Lower Mainland is that the current pipeline cannot supply enough oil to the local refinery, so it has to come by truck and by rail, which is more costly.
There are risks involved with everything we do. Planes do crash, yet more and more people fly. Cars have accidents, yet I don’t know anyone who does not own a car because they may crash.
The whole pipeline debate is fueled and funded by foreign organizations that want to shut down the oil sands for a variety of reasons, the least of which is global warming.
For example, the Tides Foundation of California has funded the whole Neil Young Tour – a foreign company trying to influence Canadian domestic policies to further its own agenda.
