Letter: MP not clear on TWU law school discrimination

Dear Editor,

It appears that Langley MP Mark Warawa has put himself on the side of Trinity Western University, with his remarks to Parliament regarding the controversy over its attempts to open a law school [Warawa backing TWU, June 3, Langley Advance].

According to Mr. Warawa, opposition to certifying TWU’s future law graduates constitutes an attack on “religious freedoms.”

When does “religious freedom” confer a right to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation?

Let us be clear, TWU’s code of conduct prohibits sexual intimacy with a member of the same sex. That is discrimination, any way you look at.

TWU is a private university based on Christian principles. It should be open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Mr. Warawa need to realize that one can be gay and a Christian.

Jesus taught people about love, inclusion, and tolerance, not hate, exclusion, and intolerance.

TWU’s archaic Christian Code of Conduct is out of step with the times. TWU cannot expect to discriminate against gay students.

To paraphrase a past prime minister, the university has no business in the bedrooms of its students.
