Re: PM destroying Canada
I was shocked to the read the misleading letter to the editor suggesting that the Prime Minister is destroying Canada. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canada has seen its unemployment rate drop to record lows; we’ve had the fastest growing economy in the G7; and meaningful progress has been made to support the middle class while at the same time taking action on issues like climate change, gender equality, and housing affordability. This is work that Canadians can and should be proud of.
Canada is a progressive and inclusive place. We pride ourselves on our generosity and our welcoming spirit. This was proudly reflected when Canadians welcomed over 40,000 Syrian refugees in 2015-16.
Canada is a nation built thanks in no small part to the contributions of immigrants, and our continued and future success depends on them. At a time when anti-immigrant fears are on the rise around the world and the world is seeing unprecedented levels of men, women and children displaced by war and persecution, Canada must demonstrate itself as a leader in welcoming newcomers.
That is why our government has taken a leadership role on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. To suggest that the Pact will somehow erode Canada’s sovereignty is entirely false. Rather, the Pact, which is non-binding, is a comprehensive set of principles to better manage migration.
Our government supports legal, orderly migration. We also understand that we have a responsibility to help the world’s most vulnerable, and we are doing just that.
